Curacao is a hub for crustaceans, including several species that are unique to the region. Outside of the ubiquitous hermit crab that you will see everywhere scurrying around the streets with its borrowed shell, look out for:

  1. Shrimp: There are several species of shrimp found in the waters around Curacao. Yum.

    • Pink shrimp: This is a common species and a target of commercial fishing

    • Spotted shrimp: Yes it is spotted :) It is commonly found in the waters around Curacao.

    • Caribbean white shrimp: Common across the region.

    • Royal Red shrimp: The royal red shrimp is a species of shrimp that is found in the deep waters off the coast of Curacao. It is known for its bright red color and is known for its incrediable flavor.

  2. Crabs: There are several species of crabs found in the waters around Curacao, including the blue land crab, which is often seen along the shorelines.

  3. Rock Lobster: The Caribbean spiny lobster, also known as the Rock lobster, comes out at night. They are highly valued for their sweet, succulent meat. But do not eat them as they are overfished.

    These lobsters have a unique ability to regenerate their limbs and antennae, which can be useful for escaping predators or avoiding traps. If they do not get caught, they can grow up to two feet long and weigh up to 10 pounds.
